Microsoft Azure delivers cloud computing capacity and enterprise AI platform services worldwide. It provides high-performance NVIDIA GPU clusters and custom Maia accelerators to power major frontier AI models. Its deep integration with OpenAI makes it a central compute hub for generative AI workloads. Its Project Natick programme submerged an 864-server capsule off Orkney from 2018 to 2020 and recorded failure rates roughly one-eighth those of land servers, but Microsoft confirmed in 2024 that it operates no subsea data centers and the programme ended without commercialisation.

Ecosystem functionHyperscale cloud backbone for premier frontier AI labs and enterprise software deployments.
